About Chiropractic

General Principles of Chiropractic

Educational medical illustration showing the human autonomic nervous system connecting the spinal cord to various internal organs. Clear, clinical visual intended for anatomical study.

Chiropractic is based on the following simple principles:

  • Our bodies are self healing and self regulating

  • The nervous system controls everything that happens in the body

  • If there is interference in the nervous system, the self healing and self regulating gets disturbed

  • Subluxations (see below) in the spine and elsewhere cause interference in the nervous system

  • Identifying and adjusting subluxations removes interference in the nervous system, therefore allowing the body to heal and regulate itself again.

What Are Subluxations?

Subluxations in the chiropractic sense are mis-alignments of the bones in your spine (the vertebrae) or elsewhere in your body. Even if minute, they can interfere with your body’s innate ability to heal and regulate itself by causing disturbances in your nervous system - the system that controls everything that goes on in your body.

Adjusting (i.e. correcting) the subluxations will reduce the interference in your nervous system, therefore allowing your body to function better and subsequently to improve your health.

What Can Chiropractic Help With?

Chiropractic is not a treatment or a therapy for any particular condition. However, since better health equals less illness and disease, vast benefits have been widely reported for a lot of health issues including (but not limited to):

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Sciatica

  • Hip pain

  • Knee pain

  • Elbow pain

  • Other joint pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Vertigo

  • Problems sleeping

  • High blood pressure

  • Arrhythmia

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Chronic Fatigue/ME

  • Anxiety/Depression

  • Digestive disorders/IBS

  • Asthma

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Learning disorders

  • Problems concentrating

  • Infantile colics

  • Bed wetting (Enuresis)

  • And many other conditions

What Causes Subluxations?

Subluxations are caused by abnormal or prolonged stress on the body of either physical, chemical, emotional or electromagnetic nature including (but not limited to):

  • Birth trauma

  • Falls

  • Road traffic accidents

  • Work or sports injuries

  • Repetitive physical strain

  • Bad postural habits

  • Lack of exercise or over-exercise

  • Physical abuse

  • Poor Nutrition

  • Alcohol- or drug abuse

  • Long term use of medication

  • Air and water pollution

  • Mental and emotional stress

  • Bullying

  • Unresolved grief

  • Emotional abuse

  • Electromagnetic radiation (i.e. cell towers, mobile phones, wifi, bluetooth devices, high voltage power lines, satellites etc.)

How Do I Know Whether I Have Subluxations?

Because the vast majority of subluxations don’t cause any symptoms for a long time (years to decades), the only way to find out is to get a check-up with a qualified NIP chiropractor.

Do I have to Experience Pain or Other Symptoms to See an NIP Chiropractor?

No, absolutely not. Prevention is better than cure, so the best time to get your nervous system  checked is long before you start to develop pain or other symptoms. Once it gets to that stage, the damage done over the years will take a long time to be resolved or might not be fully reversible.

How Often Should I Get My Nervous System  Checked?

This varies depending on age, history of trauma, illnesses and medical conditions, lifestyle habits, genetic make-up and personal preference. For most people including children, monthly check-ups appear to work best once the initial correction and repair has been done.

Is NIP Chiropractic Safe in Pregnancy, for Young Children and the Elderly?

NIP Chiropractic is very safe for people of all ages. It was originally developed as a gentle, yet effective way of analysing and adjusting subluxations in newborns and infants and has later been developed further to use with older children and adults because of its outstanding effectiveness. Regular check-ups during pregnancy also appear to minimise effects of subluxations on the developing baby and reduce complications during birth.

When Should I First Take My Child to See an NIP Chiropractor?

Even after a natural, uncomplicated birth a high number of newborns have subluxations either from constraint in the womb or from the birth process. The incidence is much higher after assisted birth (forceps or vacuum extraction) or cesarean section. In any case, a check-up as soon as possible after birth is strongly advised to minimise possible effects on the growing child.
